Flightless Bird, American mouth

So there is this song that I love by this group called Iron and Wine. The song is called "Flightless Bird, American Mouth. Listen....read the lyrics...scroll down, I shall continue.

LISTEN
I was a quick wet boy, diving too deep for coins
All of your street light eyes wide on my plastic toys
Then when the cops closed the fair, I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map and called for you everywhere

Have I found you
Flightless bird, jealous, weeping or lost you, american mouth
Big pill looming

Now I'm a fat house cat
Nursing my sore blunt tongue
Watching the warm poison rats curl through the wide fence cracks
Pissing on magazine photos
Those fishing lures thrown in the cold
And clean blood of Christ mountain stream

Have I found you
Flightless bird, grounded, bleeding or lost you, american mouth
Big pill stuck going down

So. What did you think? I personally love this song. I have absolutely *no* idea what most of the lyrics mean, and I'm fine with that because I feel like the music its self helps bring that out. The chords in the singing and even the accordian in the back ground create this sense of longing and reaching that just hits my soul. I feel like this song is about searching for what we need/want/have lost, and the journey that looking for it takes us on. The words don't need to make sense--in fact--the song would mean less if they did. If they meant something, they would be about one man's journey to discover what he wants/needs. Because the lyrics don't quite make sense and don't apply to anything, they can apply to everyone---represent the "every-man."
Now maybe I'm wrong. Maybe this song is a satirical punch to our political system, or a harsh call out on religion. But that's not what I've gotten from it. I'll take what I want, and as long as it makes me better, who cares if I'm right? Because I certainly think I am, and that's all that matters.
Thanks for reading, Team. let me know what you think!
